6 Ways To Cheer Up A Friend In Need

We’ve all had rough days. Maybe your car is in the shop or you burned dinner or your birthday plans were cancelled. If you’ve noticed that one of your friends is having one of those days, you probably wonder how to cheer them up. You might not be able to fix your friends’ problems, but you can make their day a little lighter.

1) Get Active Together

When times are tough, it can be very difficult to motivate yourself to go to the gym and stay active. That said, getting active is a great way to lift your spirits and get out of a rut when you’re going through a rough time. You can help your friend by spending some time with them at the gym. It can be a lot easier to get yourself going when you have a gym buddy. 

Spend an hour or two going to a class together, using the machines, or even swimming laps. If your friend doesn’t normally use the gym but you think a little bit of exercise may help, you may want to suggest going for a leisurely walk together. A little fresh air and a change of scenery can do a lot to raise your friend’s spirits.

2) Food Always Helps

There’s nothing like a great meal to lift someone’s mood. How you pull off feeding your friend some tasty food can go a few ways. You may want to take them out to a great dinner at a restaurant that you’ve been wanting to try or you might want to try cooking them a meal yourself. This can be a great time to try a recipe for some of your friend’s favorite sort of comfort food or even a baked treat. 

If you’re trying to cheer up a loved one that lives in another city, you might not be able to drop everything and take them out to dinner — but delivering them a pizza so they don’t have to cook dinner or even sending them a Starbucks gift card can help them cheer up on a bad day.

3) Enjoy Dumb Movies

Sometimes someone just needs a movie date to feel better. While this can be a great time to watch a new movie that you two have been wanting to see together, it can be more fun to watch a hilariously bad movie that you two can laugh at. Teen movies from when you were growing up are always a great choice when you need a little nostalgia with your laughter. The bonus to bad movies is that no one will mind if you stop listening to the dialogue to chat instead which could be exactly what your friend needs.

4) Do What You’ve Always Meant To

Often when adults are busy, they’ll put off plans that they want to do. If you want to help cheer up a friend, it might be the perfect time to do all of the things that you’ve always wanted to but put off until later. This can be the time to take a weekend to go to the beach or to the new art exhibit at the museum that you know that your friend wants to go to. This can both help cheer your friend up, take their mind off of things, and let you both do something new.

5) Help Them Around The House

When you’re going through a rough time, it can be hard to keep up with chores around the house. If a close friend of yours is having a hard time, they might appreciate the help if you offer to help them catch up with chores. This might be helping them with laundry, cleaning the kitchen, or organizing their house.  Having a clean space can do a lot to make someone feel better, but do remember that not everyone may want this sort of help. Don’t assume…but you may want to put the offer out there. You can keep things casual and say something like, “Hey, I want to watch this movie with you. If you want, we can put it on and go through your closet together?” 

6) Give A Cheerful Gift

There’s something to be said for a physical gift. This doesn’t have to be something huge. It can be a token that can remind them that you care.
